Canon 1DX Mark II : Field Test and Video Test

Once again its good to see you guys after a short while. Im Back with Canon 1DX Mark II Field Review. Thanks to Canon India for sending me Sample unit for Field test and this Mean Machine proved to be a Super reliable Beast .. The Camera as Advertised is Primarily targetted towards High speed Sports,Action,Wildlife Photography. Putting up it in test in various Action Scenarios to test how it fares.

Main Features :

-4K Video

-14FPS RAW or Jpeg  in Viewfinder and 16 FPS RAW or JPEG in LIVE VIEW

-New Metering Sensor  : 360,000 pixel sensor that is used both for metering and to provide scene awareness to Canon’s ‘Intelligent Tracking and Recognition’ (iTR) autofocus system.

-Touch Screen LCD : Now you can Touch and Focus a Subject in Videos and Photos as easy  as Using a Smart Phone.

-Dual Pixel AF : Dual Pixel CMOS AF Debuts in 1DX Mark II and The Focus tracking Feature is an Awesome addition for all the DSLR Videographers. You can leave aside a dedicated focus pullers which is of great help for budget cinematographers.

-Dual Card slots : Compact Flash and CFast Cards. 4K Videos Requires CFast cards and you can shoot upto 170 Raw Files at a stretch. With Normal CF Card you could hardly record about 5-6 seconds of 4K Video.

-Built in GPS

– 8.8 MP Frame Grab from a 4K Video

– ISO 100-51200 with expansion down to 50 and up to 409600

Being Used to 5D Series until the 5DSr for most of my kind of Work. The 1DX Looked like a Lightning Fast Beast in my hand. It was a Lil heavy in the first usage which i got used to in  a days time. It did Withstand a lot of Sand and Water to prove its weather sealing which would be visible in the 120 FPS video attached below. Though this Camera is primarily designed For Highspeed Sports and Wildlife Photography it can verywell handle Lowlight with ease.

Few Photo Samples from the Field Test ::

Exif :: Canon 1DX Mark II, Canon 500 MM F4 IS L, ISO 1000,F5.6,1/500,Spot Metering

Heres the 100% View for ISO 4000 Noise Visibility. Noise is Barely visible for this kind of night shoot.

The Provided LP E-19 (2700 MH)  is Slated to give around 1210 shots. I have shot some 800 Shots for this match and i could see 50% Battery left. I Barely used LCD and Shot very few videos with it.

New 61 Point AF for Improved Auto Focus in Lowlight and F8 Lenses :

Previous Version of 1DX allowed only center point for Focus while using Long lenses with F4 or above say 400 F4,500 F4 or 600 F4 but in 1DX Mark ii All 61 points can now focus at F8, which will be very useful when shooting telephoto lenses with 1.4x and 2x teleconverters. 41 of those points are cross-type, having both horizontal and vertical line sensitivity.

Apart From this had great time putting this Camera in Extreme Weather conditions to see on how it fares with sand and water and it did a splendid job surpassing the expectations. Few Photo Samples from the ATV,Jetski and Surfing…

Here are Few of the Important Features of 1DX Mark II ::

Multiple Exposure :: . Though this started rolling out from 5D Mark III we do have enough options to play with in Multiple Exposure. Helps a lot in Sports Photography.

Cfast Card Slot ::

1DX Mark II comes with 2 Slots. One CF card and One CFast card. While using either a CF UDMA 7 card or CFast 2.0 card, the 1D X Mark II has an unlimited buffer capacity for JPEG files — in other words, the buffer is limited only by the capacity of the memory card. With a CFast 2.0 card, the RAW buffer is a very generous 170 shots, according to Canon’s numbers, while a UDMA 7 CF card “only” allows for 73 shots. RAW+JPEG offers an 81-shot buffer with CFast 2.0 and 54 frames with CF UDMA7 cards.

 Touch Screen LCD ::

This is only used for a very limited number of features but one of these is to position and re-position with autofocus point during video recording. Touch doesnt work on Menus or Menu selection options and restricted only to choose focus points.  Combined with the camera’s Dual Pixel AF sensor design, this should make it easy to adjust focus in video without the risk of the lens over-shooting or adding distracting focus wobble to video clips, as can happen with contrast detection autofocus.

1DX Mark II – Touch Focuss Test

 Video Capabilities :: 4K & 120 FPS ::

Canon 1D X Mark II, you can now shoot Cinema 4K video (4096 x 2160 aka DCI 4K) at up to 60fps, which is great for high-resolution footage of not only action, sports and other moving subjects, but also pretty much anything else. The camera also offers DCI 4K video at 30fps (29.97), 24fps (23.98) and true cinema-centric 24.00fps. (PAL frame rates of 50p and 25p are also available.) Interestingly, there’s no UHD (3840 x 2160) option.

1DX Features 120 FPS in Full HD (1080P) Without Audio. Which is Very ideal for Creating Slowmotion Videos.  The camera can output a ‘clean’ signal across its HDMI port, for use with an external recorder or monitor (which could be used to provide focus peaking and zebra warnings, if needed), but this stream is 1080 only, not 4K.

Inbuilt Photo Processing and Frame Grab in 4K (8.8 Mega Pixel) ::

This is potentially a big time-saver for the professional photographer, especially news and/or studio photographers who often rely on delivering finished files directly from the camera and soon after capture. As part of the 1D X II’s in-camera RAW processing, DLO corrections can be applied during JPEG conversions, which is a much faster workflow than dumping memory cards of images, sorting and then converting RAW files into images using a computer. All four types of lens aberration corrections can also be applied to JPEG files as the images are being shot.

Digital Lens Optimizer ::

Canon 1DX Mark II Features including peripheral illumination correction, Chromatic Aberration Correction, Distortion Correction, Diffraction Correction.

Bulit in GPS : The EOS-1D X II does have built-in GPS for geotagging purposes, which Canon says is useful for wildlife photographers (for tracking their locations) and sports photographers (for syncing multiple cameras with accuracy). The GPS can also sync with the atomic clock for accurate timing.
